Antimalware and antivirus - what’s the difference?

the differences between antimalware and antivirus features - V3 Network & Data Security Expert

As an IT professional, we believe you know more about the differences between antimalware and antivirus features than we do, but your supervisor or management may not be aware of it.

So, don't skip this post; instead, send them this link and we'll explain everything to them.

As technology advances, so does antivirus software's ability to deal with more sophisticated online threats. The same is true for antimalware. While a virus is a type of malware, not all malware is a virus, and some malware is more dangerous than others. The original viral profile is now almost obsolete, with more dangerous types of malware taking centre stage. Antivirus provides proactive protection against threats that infect your device, whereas anti malware detects and removes active malware. The availability of both applications increases protection against the growing threat of malware attacks and strengthens IT network security. So, what is the difference between antivirus and antimalware software?

What is antivirus?

A virus is a type of malware that has the potential to replicate and spread throughout a computer system. Basic antivirus software scans your device for known infections. Antivirus software safeguards the computer system from viruses and malware by stopping them from altering or corrupting other programmes. Antivirus protects the system 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and if it detects any malicious behaviour, it destroys the virus promptly. Free antivirus usually only protects against the most common infections, such as keyloggers and worms, but premium antivirus protects against more advanced threats and even includes malware removal tools. Antivirus endpoint is the most effective at removing malware from a traditional source, such as a USB or an email attachment.

What is antimalware?

Malware refers to all sorts of harmful software, including viruses, Trojan horses, rootkits, adware, spyware, and ransomware. Antimalware software defends against malware that isn't detected by standard antivirus software. It can be installed on a desktop computer, a gateway server, or a network device. Anti-malware software updates its rules more frequently than antivirus software, giving it the best defence against new viruses you might come across while surfing the web. Antivirus software protects against typical viruses, whereas antimalware software detects new infestations. Antimalware protects your computer from all sorts of malware, including viruses.

all viruses are malware; however, not all malware is malware - V3 Network & Data Security Expert

To summarise,

all viruses are malware; however, not all malware is malware.

Here is a comparison of network security software's antimalware and antivirus features.

There are 3 major differences.

Antivirus

Antimalware

Type of protection

Antivirus software guards against a wide range of modern malware, including trojans, viruses, and worms. It is a well-known server antivirus and security programme that is loaded on computers and mobile devices to keep them safe from infection.

Antimalware focuses on newer, broader, and more sophisticated software threats, such as polymorphic malware and malware transmitted by zero-day exploits. Anti-malware software is largely concerned with preventing newer and more complex online threats.

Type of detection

File signatures are compared to a database of known viruses in signature-based detection. Your antivirus must have a predetermined repository of static signatures (fingerprints) that reflect known network risks in order to detect this type of threat. Because of their distinct coding, these risks are distinct from one another. When the antivirus scanner starts up, it creates the proper signatures for each file and compares them to the known signatures in its library. It continues to monitor network traffic and look for signature matches. If a match is detected, the file is classified as a 'threat,' and it is prevented from performing any further actions.

Heuristic-based detection proactively detects source codes that signal a threat. It is intended to detect suspicious traits in unknown, new viruses, modified variants of current threats, and known malware samples. A variety of strategies can be used in heuristic analysis. Static heuristic analysis is a heuristic method that involves decompiling and studying the source code of a questionable software. This code is then compared to previously identified viruses in the heuristic database. The code is recognised as a possible danger if a certain percentage of the source code matches anything in the heuristic database.

Type of identification

Can only recognise threats it has seen before, which are predictable but still dangerous.

Can only identify new and potentially dangerous threats that it has never seen before.

What is the main significance of having both of them for protection to eliminate hackers, malware, and computer viruses?

Robust protection for computer servers:

Antimalware software is not the same as antivirus software. Some antivirus software includes antimalware technologies, but not all. Anti malware is designed to enhance antivirus protection as the cyber threat landscape advances, so the two function together. They collaborate to give the best protection against harmful malware and encourage good online behaviour. Antimalware software detects more advanced malware, such as zero-day assaults, whereas antivirus software protects against more common threats. As cyberattacks become more widespread and complex, antimalware adapts and defends. However, this does not negate the requirement for antivirus for server protection. You'll be as protected as possible against dangers attempting to infect your device if you run both programmes at the same time and practise safe web browsing habits.

Protection against data thieves:

Data thieves are everywhere, waiting to steal data from businesses. Small businesses, in fact, are the most targeted due to fewer security protocols and a lack of resources. Anti malware and antivirus software can detect and remove viruses and malicious software used to infiltrate your network by threat actors. Without it, your company and all of its records, including your financial information and your customers' personal and sensitive information, could be jeopardised.

Extend computer lifespan:

Antivirus and anti malware software are designed to combat more than just viruses and malicious software. They may also help to extend the life of your computer. For example, when computers are not attacked by malicious software, they tend to remain in perfect working order for a longer period of time. This is due to the fact that antimalware and antivirus software can help prevent attacks by scanning all incoming data and preventing malware from being installed and infecting a computer. The programmes can also detect sophisticated malware and protect against ransomware attacks.

Lower business costs:

Another advantage of incorporating anti malware and antivirus into your business is that it reduces operational costs, both short and long term. For example, this software allows employees to concentrate on their work rather than worrying about system security.

Conclusion

Nowadays, network security experts propose a layered approach because no single tool can catch everything. It is preferable to have a variety of instruments that examine dangers from numerous angles. Remember that antivirus and antimalware software, which are available for both home users or enterprise users are complementary and can operate together to provide the maximum level of device security.
